Greenman Festival 2007

The members of the Greenman team would like to thank everyone for their enthusiasm and support. However due to a change in number of personal circumstances; we have found ourselves unable to provide the type of event we promised. We apologies for the inconvenience but we don’t feel we’d do service to the Greenman by compromising. We all feel it’s more honourable to cancel the festival in February 2007 rather than providing something that would fall short of the quality and exceptional value that we had committed to achieving.

The Greenman Team

Yule or Midwinter  - 21st June Southern Hemisphere

Deities: Mother Bertha; Father Winter; Santa Claus; Kris Kringle; St
Nick; The Kings of Holly & Oak.
Herbs: Chamomile; Rosemary; Ginger; Sage; Cinnamon.
Stones: Quartz; Blue Sunstone; Emerald; Ruby; Sapphire.

Winter day of longest night
Step aside now for the light
Thank you for the things you’ve brought
That only darkness could have wrought.

The Solar festival Yule, marks the first day of winter, occurring at the winter solstice. This is the day that the Sun is reborn to warm the Earth again and marks the shortest day of the year and hence, the time of greatest darkness. A festival of joy and light, we gather for song, feasting, and gift-giving. As the Goddess tends her new-born son, she rests from her labours for the current moment, in order to prepare for the change and growth of the coming seasons. It celebrates the birth/return of the Sun God.

Yule Log - The custom of burning the Yule log began long ago with the ancient  Scandinavians who burned a huge log in honor of the god Thor. For the Vikings, the Yule log was an integral part of their  celebration of the solstice, on the log they would carve runes representing unwanted traits (such as ill fortune or poor honor) that they wanted the gods to take from them. It was though that the log brought blessings if it burned for 24 hours. It was also thought that the longer the Yule log burned the faster the Sun would come to warm the earth.

Ways to Celebrate:

To ensure good luck and prosperity in the coming year, anoint a
bayberry candle with vegetable oil and roll it in dried chamomile. Light
the candle and allow it to burn down completely.

Foods of the Mid-Winter Solstice : turkey, cakes and puddings made
with dried fruits, fruits that represent the new-born sun such as
tangerines or oranges.

Rise before light breaks on the Solstice Day and light a golden candle
to greet the dawn. Let it burn itself out.

If using a Yule log, it must be kept burning for twelve hours, for good luck. It should be made of ash. Save an unburnt piece of the log and some of the
ashes, which can be used to light upcoming ritual fire

For those of you who enjoy making your own incense:

Yule Incense:
2 parts Frankincense
2 parts Pine needles or resin
1 part Cedar
1 part Juniper Berries
Mix and smolder to cleanse the home. Enjoy the outdoor scents.

For those of us you enjoy a warm drink on a winters eve:

Wassail Recipe: (for the crockpot)
8 cups of apple juice or cider
2 cups of cranberry juice
3/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon allspice
2 cinnamon sticks
1 orange
whole cloves

Turn the crockpot on high and pour in the apple and cranberry juices. Stir in the sugar and allspice, then add the cinnamon sticks. Stud the orange with the cloves - about 25 - 30, and toss it in. Cover the pot and cook on high for 1 hour. Change the setting to low and allow to simmer for 3 more hours then serve.

This is a recipe that you can adapt for your own tastes and is sure to warm the insides on a cool winters night. It is also great to add to mulled wine for extra effect.

Decorate Altar with evergreens (pin, rosemary, bay, juniper, and cedar)
and Dried leaves. Appropriate Foods include nuts, apples, pears, cakes
of caraway’s soaks in cider, pork. Serve Wassail, hibiscus, or ginger
tea to drink..

Reader Contribution - Thank you Arvensis for your timely contribution

                    This Yuletide

with apologies to George Michael, composer of the song:

"Last Christmas I gave you my heart,
The very next day you gave it away
This year to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special."

to the tune of which the words of this one should be sung:

Last Christmas? We gave it a miss.
The days before were the Summer Solstice.
This Christmas we did that again
To celebrate something special.

Last Christmas did not get the nod.
The very next day we were thought so odd.
This Christmas we dug in our toes:
We'll celebrate something special.

Last Christmas - we gave it away.
We'll recognize that the month after May.
That 'Christmas', the one we call Yule
We'll celebrate something special.

Last Christmas - we gave it the push.
The days before we missed all of that rush!
Next 'Christmas' in true Pagan style
We'll celebrate something SPECIAL!
